What happens in the program?

Here you explore a variety of yoga techniques. In addition, you will have the chance to explore information about yoga philosophy. In this way learning is supported in both theory and practice. With this approach, you will develop both self-awareness and confidence teaching yoga.

Personalizing Yoga Practice

It is important that both teacher and practitioner adjust yoga techniques.  The poses, breathing exercises, and meditation can all be adjusted. For this takes into account individual differences and results in more ease and empowerment for the practitioner.

What does that mean? The 23 classical poses can increase to at least 100. How is this possible? By varying the poses to suit the individual. What a way to make poses accessible! 


Even though Ayurveda is a system that originates in India, its principles can be applied everywhere. Some of these principles address rejuvenation. Applying these principles and practices increase wellness. What’s interesting is that you can apply these principles to yoga as well as to everyday life.  



Somatics is a system that offers both education and movement to regain control of your nerves and muscles. Through gentle exercises chronic muscular contractions are addressed. The result is improved flexibility and health. In brief, somatics provides a way to go through life and remain healthy. Furthermore, it disproves the belief that aging means aches, pains, and stiffness.  

 Body Therapies Yoga Training’s Uniqueness

Our lead instructor first studied at Esther Myers Yoga Studio in Toronto. Then she studied the therapeutic side of yoga. This was with Integrative Yoga Therapy at Enchanted Mountain, Brazil. Altogether our yoga style focuses on rejuvenation. It promotes compassion, appreciation and gratitude. In addition it strengthens the relationship with one’s own inner guiding voice, as well as with one’s connection with nature.

There are three possible options for completing this course:

Option One

You may take the full 200 hour program during the months of April to November. This would equal 20 in class days which is scheduled on some weekends.


Option Two

You may attend the 20 in class days in one month during the summer. For example, teachers in the school system have taken this program over their summer holidays.


Option Three

You may take smaller segments called levels over a period of one to two years. There are 4 levels altogether. Each level is 50 hours or 5 days. Levels 1 and 2 are also offered in March in Barbados. This means you could take Levels 1 &/or Level 2 in Barbados and the other levels in Hamilton, Ontario.


Here practitioners teach eight yoga classes somewhere in their community. In this way, they gain teaching experience before graduating. They also benefit from the experience of setting up and running a yoga program. During the internship practitioners receive on-line feedback and mentoring.  

For Option One, the internship occurs towards the end of the program. For Option Two and Three the internship takes place after the 20 in class days.

Class times 8.30 am to 6.30 pm.

Level 1 – Uniqueness and Asana
  • Create basic asana classes.
  • Gain insights into personalized wellness.
  • Develop language that respects the uniqueness of the individual.

In Level 1 participants practice ways to ground and center. This experience promotes ‘feeling at home in one’s body’. This in turn reduces anxiety. In addition it increases clarity and peace of mind.

2017 Dates: (1) April 8; (2) April 22; (3) April 23; (4) May 13; (5) May 27.

Summer Intensive: July 3-7, 2017

Level 2 – Exploring Breath and Energy
  • Sequence poses for rejuvenation.
  • Develop connection with the breath in poses and in life.
  • Guide students step by step towards fuller expression of pose.

2017 Dates: (6) May 28; (7) June 17; (8) June 18; (9) June 25; (10) July 16.

Barbados: March 20-24, 2017
Summer Intensive: July 10-14, 2017

In Level 2 participants give instructions to vary the poses for the individual. As well they become familiar with the causes of stress and ways to get relief. This is according to yoga philosophy. They also complete their focus on the principles for relating to others.

Level 3 – Mind and Emotions
  • Explore a variety of relaxation and mudra techniques.
  • Deliver a yoga series with simple meditation techniques.
  • Become familiar with the yogic concept of the mind.

2017 Dates: (11) July 23; (12) Sept. 09; (13) Sept. 17; (14) Sept. 23; (15) Sept. 24.
Summer Intensive: July 17-21, 2017

In Level 3 participants review yoga’s ideas on how to interact with others.  In fact the philosophy points out that this is the way to have peace of mind and clarity.  As well they study how yoga and ayurveda can affect how one feels.

Level 4:  Relationships
  • Design series that is engaging and effective.
  • Respond with increased calmness to life’s challenges.
  • Infuse fairness into your teaching and business of yoga.
  • Teach to the whole person.

2017 Dates: (16) Oct. 07; (17) Oct. 21; (18) Oct. 22; (19) Nov. 05; (20) Nov. 26

Summer Intensive: July 24-28 2017

In this final level learners deepen their connection with the physical systems of the body. Also they become familiar with the chakras. In this case, they explore the part the chakras play in the mind, body and spirit connection.

Are You Eligible?

If you have practiced poses for at least three months, you are welcome to join the program. If you can, please please start the home study in advance for the intensive program.

Sometimes students practice in their home and not at a studio. They are still eligible.

Level 1 Participant

Heather is that rare teacher who is at once grounded in traditional practice and alive to the reality and nuance in each student standing before her.

Better yet, she instructs her students in developing that same skill in all its facets. For example, how to teach to a variety of bodies, how to ensure safety and what risks are inherent in a given activity. In addition how to cultivate a language of instruction which is at once clear and sensitive to the (often not articulated) vulnerabilities of one’s students.

Heather’s teaching is incredibly challenging. She asks her students to be rigorous in their attempts to, as she puts it, “see things as they really are,” and to apply that to their everyday teaching.

Personally, I am wary of much of what passes for spirituality in some yoga classes. With Heather I found both serious philosophical inquiry and a constant consideration of practical issues and tools in the yoga classroom. This is not an advanced course in asana; it is about developing the skill of teaching itself.

Cancellation Policy

Payments are refundable only  if you cancel with 4 weeks or more advanced notice. Additionally cancellation must be in written form. There is a $50 processing fee that is non-refundable.

If for some reason you begin the course and cannot finish the program, you will not receive a refund. However, you may transfer into another program with a $150 transfer fee. Meanwhile students are expected to complete the course within 2 years.
