What is Integrative Yoga Therapy?

There are many different approaches to Yoga therapy. Integrative Yoga Therapy is a holistic, mind-body approach to health and healing which combines the ancient wisdom of yoga with the latest advances in body/mind medicine.

Integrative Yoga Therapy (IYT) was founded in 1993 by Joseph LePage and offers basic and advanced yoga teacher training programs. These programs are approved by Yoga Alliance, a nonprofit professional organization that establishes educational standards for the yoga community.

IYT’s world view understands the life journey as an ongoing process of healing culminating in freedom, and views Yoga and health within that context.

The many methods and techniques used in IYT are based on 4 principles:

  1. Yoga therapy should provide an integrated program of yoga practice based on an in-depth understanding of a particular health condition and the specific needs of the individual.
  2. Yoga therapy is based firmly in the psychology and philosophy of Yoga as it pertains to health, based on an in-depth understanding of traditional Yoga texts, including the Yoga Sutras.
  3. Yoga therapy should embrace all aspects of Yoga, including breathing (pranayama), mudra, guided imagery and meditation. Poses (asana) is an important aspect within the context of an integrated practice.
  4. Yoga therapy is based in creative, student-centered education where teachers are facilitators, not gurus; facilitating the awakening of the student’s connection to his or her own true source of wellness where healing can occur.

Integrative Yoga Therapy is now headquartered in Brazil with regional representatives in the U.S. and Canada. Body Therapies Yoga Training is a regional representative of IYT.
