Cat Pose For the Spine
Cat Pose
The spine houses our nervous system and exercising this very important part of our anatomy helps the flow of communication between the brain and the other cells in the body.
A simple and very effective yoga pose for the spine is the Cat pose. The cat-like movement of the spine creates more space between the vertebrae and increases flexibility. The Cat pose can be practised as one continuous movement with the breath, inhaling one way and exhaling the other; arching the upper back and dropping the head, then returning the head and spine to neutral.
An additional step called the Cow can be included if there is no lower back problem. With the Cow, the tailbone goes up and the head is raised. The Cat pose, without the Cow, is recommended during pregnancy.
Enjoy a variation in this pose. Explore: hands can face in different directions, the hips can sway from side to side; the arms can move around to the side of the body; figure 8s can be made with the body. Do as you please with this freedom pose.
