Performance, Will, Surrender

What is it about the mind that it so loves to have a sense of achievement? Let’s observe how we can be all peaceful and relaxed after a breathing exercise; feeling together, like nothing, absolutely nothing can disturb this state. Then there it comes, a yoga pose to be performed.

Perhaps that’s what it is; the feeling of performance. Now where in the world or rather in my head, or even in my body, does the need to perform live?

O.K., so it’s time for Downward Dog. The question is, can I remain in this oh so natural state from the breathing exercise, and breathe through performance syndrome, the need to do it right stance, and my 100% effort or nothing attack on the pose?

Was that word attack? Non-violence is the first commandment, so to speak of yoga. Let’s remember that. Let’s get Attitude to cooperate with this yoga fundamental. Let’s move with grace, strength and will, and yield to the pose. Breathe in and be aware of your breath. Exhale, drop your weight to the floor. Scan the body and make adjustments to alignment; lengthen the spine, and breathe. Yield. Move into the pose with ease, going only as far as your body allows. Hold and breathe. Notice how you feel. Notice how the breath changes as you hold the pose. What’s it telling you?

Breath and body are saying it’s time to come out of the pose. It doesn’t matter whether you are first or last to come out of the pose. No performance. No proving anything. No success. No failure. Exhale, return to the basic pose, keep the eyes closed and be aware of the sensations in your body.

Stay in awareness of the inside world as you open your eyes.
