Feet to the Earth, Head to the Sky
Life is movement. Though you may be lying, calm and relaxed, there is so much movement taking place within your body: the heart is pumping, the lungs are expanding and returning to normal, and various sensations may be felt throughout the body.
In your day-to-day routine, do you support or inhibit these natural processes of your body?
Take standing, for example; are you aware of your standing posture? Stand as you normally would.
Does your chest collapse in and hamper your breathing as you hunch your shoulders over?
Do you habitually place more weight on one leg, gradually throwing your body out of alignment, affecting communication between brain and organs and limbs?
The basic standing pose in Yoga, Tadasana, encourages us to stand still and to stand well, with the weight evenly distributed between both feet. Imagine that you are a tree, planted in the earth from the waist down, growing roots and taking nourishment from the earth. Above the ground, the head grows upwards to the sky, balancing evenly on the neck and shoulders. Feet to the earth, head to the sky.
Remember to breathe slowly and deeply to nourish and support your body and calm the mind.
